Four and a half exciting decades of broadcasting fine music to Melbourne’s music lovers.

On 1 July 1975 at 6.30pm with a burst of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, 3MBS arrived on Melbourne’s airwaves as Victoria’s pioneer community broadcaster.  It was the realisation of the dream of one man, Brian Cabena, a classical music lover and radio enthusiast, who, frustrated by the lack of programming available to Melbourne’s music lovers, had a vision for a subscription-funded classical music radio music broadcaster for Melbourne.

Many people and events have shaped the journey to 3MBS becoming the broadcaster we love and enjoy today.  Highlights have included the move from Kew to our state-of-the-art home in the beautiful Abbotsford Convent precinct, our annual marathons show-casing world class music and the capacity to broadcast wonderful live performances from our Lady Marigold Southey performance studio.

We warmly thank all our subscribers and supporters – we couldn’t have done it without you!  A big thank you is of course owed to all our volunteers over the past 45 years. Every single volunteer has been an integral part of the station’s journey and we wouldn’t be here today without them!
