Susan Porter had long been a listener and subscriber to 3MBS when she went on a tour of the Abbotsford Convent, including our studios. What a lovely environment and building, she thought. So, when she heard an appeal for volunteers to join 3MBS, she decided to give it a go. She had just completed two years of very demanding volunteer work with refugees, and it was time for another challenge, and one which matched her interests.
A whole new world opened up to me. I enjoyed learning to operate a broadcasting panel, discovering different composers, attending 3MBS special events and I made many friends. My concert-going also increased because I was more aware of what events were coming up in Melbourne.
Franz Schubert remains Susan's favourite composer and Kathleen Ferrier her favourite performer, partly because she hailed from Blackburn, the town in Lancashire where Susan spent her early childhood. She admits to a great fondness for Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen as well, but promises not to play either of them on Intermezzo, which she hosts on Mondays. Well, only in very exceptional circumstances.
