John ‘retired’ from regular 3MBS activities in April 2018 to move to Canberra where he is currently Vice-President at ArtSound-FM (part of the Fine Music Network) providing liaison between the Board and the Programming Team.
John began his association with 3MBS in early 1975, before it had started broadcasting. He served on the Committee in 1976 and as President from 1980–1982. He was part of a small broadcasting committee in 1983 and 1984 that revamped the on-air approach, which resulted in a stronger financial performance. During another Presidency, 1985–1988, John oversaw the introduction of radiothons, transmission from Mt Dandenong and greatly improved finances. In 1986 he introduced a training program. From 2011–2014, John held the Policy portfolio on the 3MBS Board and oversaw development of the Policy and Procedures Handbook, renewal of the 5-year licence and establishment of the current Broadcasting Taskforce structure. For almost 5 years after retiring from the Board, he led the Quality & Standards Working Group.
John has programmed and presented many series – Idiosyncracies, A Mid-Winter Christmas, Offbeat, Intermezzo, Concert Rostrum, Music in Melbourne, Illuminations (operas of Vaughan Williams) – and over the last 25 years has thoroughly enjoyed presenting his favourite music genres in Organ & Choral Music as well as A Little Night Music – From Around the World. Despite retirement, John has arranged to return to present these two programs, hopefully, every three months. His favourite composer is Vaughan Williams.
