  • 2019 Herald Sun Aria Competition: The Finals. Join us for Australia's annual and biggest competition for aspiring opera stars. Now in its 94th year this prestigious competition has spawned or accelerated the careers of some of the greatest names in opera from Wagnerian soprano Marjorie Lawrence way back in 1928 to Natalie Aroyan who won the competition in 2008. Other winners of the competition include Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Jonathan Summers, Daniel Sumegi, June Sloane and Nicole Car, for whom the competition has been a springboard to international fame. Join us for a recording exclusive to 3MBS and made on October 23 in the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Hall by our own sound engineer John Bullock. Thrill at the singing, as the finalists perform with the Melbourne Opera Orchestra under Greg Hocking. Laugh along with witty Master of Ceremonies Christopher Lawrence. And revel in the passion - cheer or hurl brickbats - as Greg Hocking, Dimity Shepherd and John Bolton-Wood make the fiendishly difficult decision of who will be this year's winner.
