Melbourne in Concert presented by Allan Smith, 7pm Sunday 13 April
March of the Women was created in 2020 to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month and was established by flautist Eliza Shephard to celebrate female composers from around the world and their “flute+” repertoire.
After five years March of the Women now represents a significant, curated collection of works by female composers worldwide, demonstrating the various ways that the flute can be used in music, and the strength and creativity that women bring to the world of music.
On Sunday 13 April, we present the second of five monthly March of the Women live-to-air performances. 3MBS and March of the Women curator and artistic director, Eliza Shephard, are collaborating to present different ensembles and works each month, and tonight we welcome Tailors to the 3MBS studios.
Pierrot ensemble Tailors consists of highly accomplished solo and chamber musicians with a passion for exploring the depths of collaborative repertoire, and for showcasing the exquisite range of genres this ensemble can navigate. With an interest in playing underrepresented composers’ works as well as pieces that are less familiar to the contemporary audience, Tailors add their voices to the collective push for equal representation and diversity in the Australian music scene. The name ‘Tailors’ is inspired by the art of interweaving genres, cultures, and stories through music.
Tailors consists of Melbourne’s most sought-after instrumentalists, with the members holding positions within and frequently performing with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Australia Orchestra. Tailors features Eliza Shephard (flutes), Philip Arkinstall (clarinets), Tiffany Cheng (violin), Caleb Wong (cello), and Peter de Jager (piano).
Tailors showcases an award-winning line-up of musicians, with some of the accolades including the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award (Philip & Eliza), a Freedman Fellowship recipient (Peter), winner of the ANAM Concerto Competition (Caleb), and the 3MBS Audience Choice Award (Tiffany).
