Melbourne in Concert, 7pm Sunday 9 March
March of the Women was created in 2020 to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month and was established by flautist Eliza Shephard to celebrate female composers from around the world and their “flute+” repertoire.
After five years March of the Women now represents a significant, curated collection of works by female composers worldwide, demonstrating the various ways that the flute can be used in music, and the strength and creativity that women bring to the world of music.
On Sunday 9 March, we begin a series of five, monthly, live-to-air performances between March and July in this, the sixth year of March of the Women. 3MBS and March of the Women curator and artistic director, Eliza Shephard, are collaborating to present different ensembles and works each month, and tonight we welcome Ensemble CANE to the 3MBS studios.
Championing extraordinary works by composers past and present, Ensemble CANE (composer, Christopher Healey, pianist Adam McMillan, saxophonist Niels Bijl, and flautist Eliza Shephard) is a collective of acclaimed and award-winning Australian musicians dedicated to bringing bold, imaginative, and inspiring performances to audiences of music they will be delighted to discover.
Combining imaginative programming with breathtaking performances, CANE creates concerts that speak to modern hearts and minds — music that pulls at heartstrings, lifts spirits, and leaves audiences moved and inspired. We believe there are few things more powerful and soul-stirring than hearing a musical masterpiece for the very first time and we’ve made it our mission to bring that experience to every audience.
