You and a friend could have a ‘night of nights’ at Opera Australia.

Watching his wife dance under the stranger’s spell, King Roger struggles with his own passions: choosing between the sacred love he knows and the sensuous, glittering realm of hedonism the shepherd preaches.

Receiving a 4 1/2 star review from Limelight magazine in January when it premiered in Sydney, this is a not to be missed production. Clive Paget described the little-performed opera as ‘a heady cocktail of turn-of-the-century post-Wagnerian Romanticism with French impressionist attention to detail and deeply embedded fragments of orthodox chant and Moorish melodies’. You can read the entire review here.

This co-production with the Royal Opera House was first performed in Covent Garden and was “rapturously acclaimed” by critics who described Kasper Holten’s arresting staging as a “major artistic triumph” (The Telegraph, UK). Andrea Molino conducts a cast led by Arthur Espiritu, Lorina Gore and Michael Honeyman.

Szymanowski’s intoxicating, iridescent music is rarely heard on the opera stage, so don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear a 20th-century Polish masterpiece.

King Roger is playing at Arts Centre Melbourne May 19-27, 2017. Visit www.opera.org.au for more information.
