Who’s the local Sydney boy who studied piano in Melbourne and went on to become music director for one of the world’s great ballet companies?
Ormsby Wilkins started life training as a concert pianist at the Conservatories of Sydney and Melbourne before the ballet bug caught him, and he was appointed resident conductor of the Australian Ballet in 1982. After 16 years as Music Director of the National Ballet of Canada he was appointed Music Director for American Ballet Theatre.
Ormsby Wilkins comes from a remarkable family of radio journalists, and his name will be familiar to some through his father, a pioneering radio journalist on Melbourne’s 3AW in the 1960s and 1970s.
Ormsby Wilkins talks with Doug Beecroft about his life, his family and his passion for ballet on Reflections at 5pm Sunday 17 September (repeated at 11am Sunday 24 September).
