Talented young pianists and singers in Melbourne were recently treated to the experience and profound inspiration of English pianist Dr Graham Johnson, one of the world’s leading vocal accompanists.  In July he conducted a series of master classes on lieder and song for the inaugural Melbourne International Festival of Lieder and Art Song conducted under the auspices of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music of the University of Melbourne. For over thirty years Graham Johnson has accompanied many of the world’s greatest singers including Thomas Allen, Victoria de los Angeles, Elly Ameling, Thomas Hampson, Dame Felicity Lott, Jessye Norman and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.  He’s recorded extensively for Hyperion Records, including the complete Schubert Lieder, a milestone in the history of recording, and he’s the author of several books, including a three-volume study of Schubert songs, and their poets. Doug Beecroft talks to Graham Johnson about this most personal art form and you can hear their conversation by clicking on the arrow below.  (Interview first broadcast on Reflections 16 September 2018).
