SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY No.11 (‘The Year of 1905’)
Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 11 ('The Year of 1905') will be the Australasian Orchestra’s featured work in this concert under its conductor Robert Dora. The Symphony is one of Shostakovich’s most dramatic and challenging works portraying the event in the year 1905, when in Russia's St Petersburg Square the protest march of workers, students and intellectuals was brutally crushed by Tsarist forces. Other works in this concert will be the rarely performed picturesque Colonial Song by Percy Grainger and the delightful and challenging Above Ground, Concerto for Percussion & Orchestra by Australian composer Robert Davidson featuring the well-known and widely admired Australian percussionist Brent Miller.
