Netsuke and Inrō

Scott A. Aschauer

the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival will feature the premiere of Melbourne composer Scott A. Aschauer's new chamber opera Netsuke and Inrō. Combining elements of Japanese noh and kabuki theatre with Italian opera, Netsuke and Inrō is an innovative new Australian work exploring the extraordinary relationship between Japan and the West during the third year of the Meiji restoration. The work utilises an authentic hand-carved noh mask and an antique netsuke and inrō set crafted by skilled artisans in Japan. This world premiere performance will feature some of Victoria's finest classical performers including flautist Jennifer Timmins (winner of 3MBS’s The Talent 2018), violinists Estelita Rae and Amough Ananth, and cellist Ben Nicholson. Join these fine talents as they come together for a thrilling evening of original Australian opera in St Kilda. Tickets $29 plus booking fee available from
