Fantasies, Overtures & the Black Dog

Heidelberg Wind Ensemble with Guest Clarinet Soloist: Amy Barry, conducted by Stephen Carpenter

This first concert to begin the 2021 Heidelberg Wind Ensemble Season is a not to be missed concert event. Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture, written in 1947 to mark the 30th anniversary of the October Revolution, will begin this concert by Heidelberg Wind Ensemble. Followed by Dello Joio’s Fantasies on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, to Woolfenden’s celebration of Warwickshire County’s Roman history, SPQR, then a composition inspired by the music of the hard-rock band of the 1970s Led Zeppelin, the brilliant & electric Black Dog, featuring our guest clarinet soloist, Amy Barry. Finally, James Barnes’s Symphony No. 3 – The Tragic. This work progresses from the deepest darkness of despair all the way to the brightness of fulfilment and joy. A powerful work and amongst Barnes’s best compositions for wind band.
