An Evening with Roger Neill
Roger Neill
Theatre Heritage Australia is hosting an evening with Roger Neill, whose latest book, The Simonsens of St Kilda, tells the fascinating true story of a family of singers and their pioneering opera company.
Extraordinarily, twelve of the children and grandchildren of Martin and Fanny Simonsen became professional singers. Two became international stars: daughter Frances Saville became a prima donna in Mahler’s famous company in Vienna, while granddaughter Frances Alda rose to star at the Met in New York alongside the legendary tenor Caruso and conductor Toscanini.
Roger's previous book, DIVAS: Mathilde Marchesi and her Pupils, tells the story of Mathilde Marchesi who trained more international opera stars than anyone before, or since, including Australia's own Nellie Melba. An internationally recognised expert on Australian photographer, H. Walter Barnett, in 2021 he contributed an essay for the THA publication, The Falk Studios: The Theatrical Portrait Photography of H. Walter Barnett.
