Musical Portrait: Stefan Cassomenos - July 16

The 3MBS Musical Portraits series continues in July with an intimate portrait of Stefan Cassomenos.  Tune in during Thursday Intermezzo at 6pm on Thursday July 16 to hear Stefan perform live-to-air from the 3MBS Marigold Southey Performance Studio.

Stefan Cassomenos has steadily built a reputation as one of Australia’s brightest young pianists.  In May of this year Stefan and the Yarra Trio were prizewinners (for best performance of the set work) at the Trio Di Trieste International Competition, beating some of the best established young groups from Europe.  Cassomenos was also recently the Guest Artistic Director of the 2009 Piano Landmarks Festival at Melba Hall.

As a soloist Stefan has performed in St Petersburg, Tallinn, Warsaw, Krakow, Athens, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, London, Bangkok, and Tokyo.  His 2007 London debut was described by John Amis, as “alive, passionate, and dramatic … as if the pianist’s life depended on it. This was a prodigious London debut by a formidable talent.” Stefan is also a composer, and his works have been performed by the Symphony Orchestras of Melbourne and Adelaide.

For this Musical Portrait 3MBS will feature the various facets of this significant young Australian artist – as soloist, ensemble member and composer.

Changes To Saturday Program Schedule

3MBS is very excited to announce that from Saturday July 4 a brand new program will go to air every Saturday evening between 6pm and 8pm.  ‘Saturday Baroque’ will feature the finest music from this glorious period of fine music.  Programmed and presented on alternate Saturdays by Jackie Burns and John Collins, ‘Saturday Baroque’ will be the perfect way to start your Saturday night on 3MBS.

Fans of piano music will need to re-set your clocks to tune in an hour earlier to hear ‘The Piano Album’ between 5pm and 6pm.  Brass music fans should not dismay – we do hope to resurrect ‘Sounding Brass’ once we can find a better time-slot to put it to air.

Immediately following ‘Saturday Baroque’ will be the new-look ‘Saturday Evening Concert’ program from 8pm to 10pm.  In a revised 2-hour format this concert program will be programmed and presented each week by Linda Baynham.

Now more than ever there’s a perfectly good reason to stay home on Saturday nights and tune in to 103.5FM.

Piano Album:  Bernard Holkner/Martin Kelly - 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Saturday Baroque:  John Collins/Jackie Burns - 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Saturday Evening Concert:  Linda Baynham - 8:00pm - 10:00pm

Student Composition Project

3MBS FM presents the 2009 Student Composition Project thanks to the support of the Australia Council.

This competition and workshop series is open to all school-aged students across Victoria in 2009. Students from Regional areas are encouraged to apply for transport assistance. Students are required to submit to 3MBS FM one original composition of between 6-10 minutes duration as a score or score +
recording, accompanied by an Entry Form. Instrumentation must be for any acoustic instrument or combination of acoustic instruments (i.e. no amplified guitars).

Twenty students will be selected to take part in 2 days of workshops with 4 leading Australian composers – Calvin Bowman, Barry Cockcroft, Caerwen Martin and David Chisholm. Each composer has their own style and approach to composition, so it promises to be an exciting series of workshops at the Abbotsford Convent. At the end of the workshops, student compositions may be professionally recorded at 3MBS FM, and copies of the recordings distributed to music institutions across Australia.

Compositions and Entry Form should be printed out or hand-written and posted to:
3MBS FM – Student Composition Project
St Euphrasia
1 St Heliers St
Abbotsford VIC 3067

For more information, please email Susan Batten at education@3mbs.org.au

Entries close Friday July 17, 2009.

*Please note that this project is not related to the 2009 3MBS National Composer Awards.
